The meeting with CP proved to be useful to progress the project. Having been out to photograph during two storms, both Eunice and Storm Franklin I had images to share. The presentation of images and discussions that followed left no time for feedback on the actual presentation submitted.

I felt that although the meeting was productive, it would have been useful to gain some feedback about the proposal. Throughout the meeting, there was discussion regarding the direction that my FMP project could take, possibly being subverted to a project about the sea. It was suggested that research should be directed towards maps and charts.

Storm Franklin swept across the south coast of the UK

Halsewell was wrecked against these cliffs, in January 1786 during a southwesterly storm. Storm Franklin provided the same conditions with the wind blowing a force 8-9 with the sea state having 4-5m waves. The wave crashed into the cliffs, some reaching 30m or more.

These conditions do not always give the best conditions for photography and although taking them was fun and presented problems I am not sure they are technically good enough.

The first assignment hot on the heels of the Pecha Kucha presentation is the written proposal for the final major project. The presentation laid the footings and groundwork for the proposal. The proposal fleshes out and provides the finer details.

The project is assessed on two learning outcomes, the first is sustainability and the second professionalism.

Please feel free to review the proposed project.

Andreas Feininger has a remarkable difference from many photographers in that he grasps the use of long focal lengths to gain a truer rendition of scale by capturing from a greater distance.

Andreas Feininger Brooklyn Bridge

The above image shows how the scale of the bridge is emphasised by the boat going under the bridge. We all perceive the size of the boat which allow us to comprehend the bridge. Using a smaller focal length nearer to the bridge would distort and reduce the size and give a false perspective, however, that is possibly what we would more relate to with the more common focal lengths.

This principle is something that I feel is often overlooked, or often forgotten. I know that I am guilty of this. Remember all the features of the lens that you use.

Feininger’s principle lens, which he discusses, is 40″ which would work out just over 1000mm which is certainly not typical for landscape photography, Maybe more at home with wildlife or sports.

The landscape images stand out not because they are of new things or locations but because he has moved away repetitive images of things we have all seen.

Feininger also utilises the long focal lengths in the creation of more abstract art in the miniature utilising shells and other small objects, again showing that a long lens can be used for more than one application.

I take from this the reminder that we have the tools and remember to use them to their most.

The first step in the MA has been to produce a Pecha Kucha presentation to be able to clearly and concisely explain to the supervisor what plans you have and be able to discuss ideas for clarity prior to making the proposal for the FMP. Simple idea and a worthwhile exercise.

The project I planned to work on would have a maritime theme about shipwrecks and wrecking. After the presentation, through the following discussion, some elements were removed to bring more focus and cohesiveness to the planned project. The original idea was too broad may be the grounds for two or three projects.

Colonialism was raised by CP and this aspect is one element that will add to the project that I had failed to include. An example book provided was Anarchy by William Dalrymple, and the work of Olivia Arthur – Stranger was also quoted. Further artists to consider would be Max Pinckers and Michal Iwanowski.

The advantage of the presentation is that this lays the foundation for the production of the FMP Proposal, which is the first piece of graded work that will be assessed against the learning outcomes LO5 Sustainability and LO7 Professionalism.

The next meeting is in the diary for feedback on the proposal that is due in on 14/02/2022

Anthony has a strong portfolio where a great deal of trust and acceptance has been gained to embed with the individuals in his project. I feel that many of the projects have boundaries that start to cross blending into more of a major project with chapters.

God’s country reminds me of Sally Manns work with her family however this work is harsh and abrupt.

At present, I don’t feel that this is work that can directly inform current work but I feel that the work stands strong enough to make notes for future reference.

I say the research modules are over, this does not mean that the research is over. I must have had a following wind as the marking says this is the point that I progress to Final Major Project.

The course has started and the supervisors allocated.

Edward Burtynsky is an industrial photographer, specializing in large format work. Many of the images produced are aerial images over the industrial areas such as toxic deltas or large open cast mines. His portfolio is not limited to just industrial however that is the focus of my interest.

The work he has produced over the decades resonates not only for the current project but passed as well. Some images such as the outflows or deltas lead to a very abstract image which is where Burtynsky aims his work, ‘I like it when the viewer can’t ‘get it’ instantly,” says Burtynsky, poring over one of his two-metre wide prints to find a clue that proves we are looking at a river delta, not just an abstract swirl of reds and browns.’ 1

The image from the open cast copper mine shows that scale that mining has been allowed to expand in some regions of the world. Other mining images such as the Iberia collection show a more humble mining operation. It has to be realised that even the most humble of operations still impact the planet.

Fig 1 Edward Burtynsky

The image here entitled Iberia Quarries #4 Solubema Co Bencatel Portugal may be mistaken for a small mine but when you read the image you will see the road. At first, a road is just seen, but scaling the road against the large stone blocks and the size of a truck the true implications of the mine are realised.

This work ties well with my current project and the use of large-format, panoramic or aerial images is something to consider as the practice develops.

‘an object, quality, or event whose presence or occurrence indicates the probable presence or occurrence of something else.’ 1

This brings forth the idea that one looks at the information being given, are we looking at the sign or is that not seen in the presence of the occurrence or presence. Are we blindly following directions without seeing the sign? I looking into this as a project idea I have evaluated the option of expanding, as I do not feel that the sign has to be a conventional sign ‘go left’ or ‘fire exit’ what does the tattoo on someone’s back mean as a sign?

There are many signs and this dates back millennia as before spoken words there was cave art. This topic is clearly an expansive arena.. One risk would be that it becomes an Ed Ruska 26 Gasoline Stations or a disjointed collection.

Take a magazine and remove all the text with a sharpie. Select three pages from the magazine that you find interesting and write about it – Simple.

Redacting the magazine is the easy part. In selecting I first chose the page with the children and the bears. Without the context have we now discovered giant children somewhere and have teddy bears finally arrived on our shores? Another part of the children’s image raises the question what are they looking at?

The second page I found interesting for the reason you can still understand what its about. A church on a route in the NW of Dorset.

The final selection was a page whose layout seemed to be repeating over and over in the magazine. I can not be sure if it is formula or lazy in the production

The first encounter with this task certainly made me wonder why. Having now completed the task it is clear that it causes one to take time to explore images and page layouts.
